Body cycles and Brain stuff
* Controlled Process- having to focus on a task
* Automatic process- don't need to focus on a task
* we have 4 rythms:
1. circadian rhythms- 24 hours
2. ultradian rhythms- 90 minutes
3. Infradian rhythms- more than 24 hours less than 1 year
4. circannual rhythms- yearly cycle
How does the body "know" the cycles?
-endogenous (internal) cues and exogenous (external cues)
* examples of exogenous cues:
- light/dark cycle
- clocks and social cues
- other species-> go by food availability, electromagnetic field fluctutations
* examples of endogenous cues:
- SCN of hypothalamus
- responsiveness to light/dark receptors
- pineal gland-> releses melatonin
What are some cycles?
-sleep/wake
- body temperature
- blood pressure
- attention/coordination
- pooping

Ultradian Rhythms (90 min)
- hormone release
-appetite levels
-energy and alertness
- urine
- revolves around a sleep/wake cycle

Infradian (>24 hrs<1year)
- menstrual cycle (yup that gift of mother nature)
- endogenous: hormone levels (and god damn cramps)
-exogenous: pheromones--> dorm room effect (girls that hang out alot/ live together get their period at same time)

Circannual Rhythms
*Animals have hibernation
* some people have SAD (seasonal affective disorder)--> depression over winter
* some people have SAD (seasonal affective disorder)--> depression over winter
Sleep
* Kids get more REM sleep b/c brain makes connection during that time
* older people only get stage 2 sleep sometimes
*Brain needs REM --> not sure why
* Narcoleptics usually go straght to REM sleep when thet get sleep attacked
* REM behavior disorders- acting out dreams--> muscles don't paralyze during sleep
